Atop the 4th Wall is a web series starring Lewis "Linkara" Lovhaug as a heroic gunslinger type who saves the universe and stuff. Except it's mostly about how he sits on a couch and makes fun of bad comics. But he does that other stuff too, sometimes. When the show started, it didn't have a theme song, so Linkara posted a video inviting viewers to send in theme song demos. He suggested preferably rock. I shook my head, thinking "nope, that's not your show". To my mind, he needed a gunslinger theme, something with a hint of western, to reflect his persona, with his brown jacket and hat, and his flintlock pistol. It wasn't quite western, but close enough. I had never written anything western before, so I figured if I just try to make it western, it'd still not be too western. That night, I wrote half of this song (mostly out of quotes and recurring themes from the show, using Johnny Cash, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Ennio Morricone, as well as all the cartoon themes from my childhood as inspiration for the sound and structure) and recorded it on a crappy laptop mic. Not only did Linkara choose my crappy demo; he chose it over the clean recording I sent in right after he chose it (to much complaint from viewers with sensitive ears; that original recording was not meant to be used). Some time later (for some anniversary episode or something), he commissioned me to write and record this extended version, in which I used some more updated quotes and references to fill it out. A shortened edit of this recording is still being used on the show today.
